Causes of Muscle Strain
Muscle strain occurs when a muscle is overstretched, cause micro tears in the tissue. It’s also called “pulling a muscle” or “spraining a muscle” and can have varying degrees of severity. Symptoms of muscle strain include pain, swelling, stiffness, immobility, and muscle spasms.
Muscle strain most often occurs in the back, neck, and hamstrings but they can occur in any muscle of the body. Participation in sports is a common cause of muscle strain. Overexerting oneself, poor form, and inadequate stretching before and after physical activity all contribute to the risk of having a muscle strain. It’s important to maintain flexibility and practice proper form in order to prevent muscle strain. If a minor strain does occur, it’s important to give it the attention it needs to prevent more serious injury.
Treatments for Muscle Strain
Minor strains can usually be treated simply by resting, icing, and elevating the affected area. Over the counter anti-inflammatory medications can be used to treat the pain and swelling.
